Meridian, MS - The August 8th primary elections are just around corner, and the Lauderdale County Election Commissioners are prepping their poll workers for the big day.
“We spend quite a bit of time finding poll workers and hiring poll workers, this year we have approximately 296 poll workers because we are hiring poll workers for the Democratic party, and we are hiring poll workers for the Republican Party.” says Gloria Dancy
Those who are hired to be poll workers must complete mandatory training every year. Chairperson Gloria Dancy explains what all the training intel’s. “You’re going to learn, the opening of the poll, you’re going to learn what the bailiff does, what the R&R does, the responsibilities of shutting down the poll, what the bailiff does, the time that it opens, the time that it close.”
So how does someone qualify to be a poll worker in Lauderdale County? “You have to be registered in Lauderdale County and one of the election commissioners needs to hire you because they will tell you where you’re working at, where your precinct will be.”
As the training is set to end on Friday, Gloria Dancy advises anyone wanting to be a poll worker in future elections. “Anytime somebody feels that they want to work at the poll, just simply notify the courthouse, the courthouse usually notifies us.”
