Meridian, MS - The Lauderdale County School Board approved efforts to pursue a bond referendum for the first-ever, centralized Career & Technical Education Center for the District. The bond seeks to cover the total cost, expected to range between $17 and $20 million.
Board President Kelvin Jackson sees the center as a great investment. “One of the things I have heard all the time since I’ve been a member of the school board was that our public schools should put more emphasis on CTE.”
The new center will serve as innovation to provide students with access to a range of specialized programs and vocational training opportunities. Director of Career & Technical Education Rob Smith feels CTE is the way to go. “Statewide the Graduation rate for Career & Technical students is 98%. In General Ed its only 88%, so that tells you why we need Career & Technical Education, it is the way education should be done.”
Approving October 3rd as a voting day on the referendum, the school board seeks public help as well. “We welcome your questions and welcome your feedback and input throughout this process.”
The school board’s goal is to open the new CTE center in January 2025, for its students, as well as those who attend Meridian Public Schools, private schools, or homeschool.
Lauderdale County School District says they are excited to invest not only in their students, but also in the community.
