Meridian, MS - The hunt for more transportation continues for Lauderdale County School District as time to go back to school Is getting closer.
"We’re in need of bus driver currently, we have some positions open for the next school year, the 23-24 school year, and we are actively seeking bus drivers." says Tim Moore.
Tim Moore is the Transportation Director for Lauderdale County Schools and feels that there is a very strong need for bus drivers. “When Covid came about we had a lot of bus drivers at that point decide they did not want to drive any longer, so trying to keep full time drivers now has become an increasingly hard thing to do.”
The shortage of drivers is not only the result of covid alone. “We have bus drivers retire also from year to year, and filling those positions has just become harder to do.”
Tim Moore says the shortage in drivers has also caused the school district to think of other ways to cover transportation. “We look at the number of children on the buses, look at the number of buses we’re running, we the length of the route, all these things we take into consideration, and we sometimes have to combine routes in doing so.”
Lauderdale County is still searching for bus drivers for the 2023-2024 school year.
