Lauderdale County School District reacts to new CDC school guidelines

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. - The CDC announced an update on a COVID-19 guideline for K-12 schools in regards to physical distance in classrooms. For elementary schools and middle schools, at least three feet distance is recommended, with six feet still being ideal for high school students. Lauderdale County School District says they will continue with previous guidelines due to lower case numbers.

“We’re going to continue doing our social distancing and all the prevention we’ve been doing here at the school system," said LCSD Lead Nurse Sheri Shelby. "Our numbers are drastically going down in the last two weeks. We can see it being from getting the vaccinations.”

Following rules by the Mississippi State Department of Health, the district sees no need in any changes, because they are working already. COVID-19 Liaison Dr. Deshannon Davis says they will continue to monitor the children off of their week of spring break.

“...will continue with the six foot rule. We’ll continue with our safety measures especially coming off of spring break," said We know a lot of our kids were exposed. What we were doing was working prior to spring break so we’re going to continue to do that until the end of the school year.”

One Southeast Elementary School parent says she believes it’s time for students to come back to a sense of normalcy with the new update.

“I think three is okay. We are more than ready to see a little bit of normalcy around here so letting them interact with each other a little more and be closer together-I think that’s a great thing," said Brooke Neil.

The Lauderdale County School District will continue with six feet distance for all schools.
