The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department is having trouble searching for qualified candidates to fill positions. The department announced that they are looking to hire deputies and detention officers.
“We are looking for people who want to be a part of a team," Lauderdale County Chief Duty Ward Calhoun. "We are looking for folks who understand we set an example in the community in the way we live our lives and the way that we act.”
Calhoun says there are high expectations in serving the community. Starting pay for a deputy is $15.17 and entry level detention officers begin at $11.38 in Lauderdale County.
“We have some open slots currently. There are many steps depending on which position a person is applying for," Chief Deputy Calhoun. "There are just numerous benefits as an employee that a person can look at that can help take care of them and their family as they earn a living.”

Benefits include medical insurance, life insurance, paid vacation, holiday pay and more. There are different qualifications for each position. Calhoun explains the same requirements for each position.
“Obviously they couldn’t have a felony conviction on your record, they have to be able to pass a background check, a drug screen, have a GED or high school diploma at minimum and we do a reading and writing assessment.”
Those who are interested can apply online or stop by the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department for an application.
