Lauderdale School District's Pre-K Program Comeback

For the first time in over 10 years, the Lauderdale County School Systems have brought back the Pre-K Program. The District received funding to allow for one kindergarten class at each school. We hear from a teacher from southeast elementary on how she thinks the program impacts the students.

Keri Wright who has been teaching for over twenty years said, "I think it's fabulous already, just with the social and emotional aspects of it. You know, they get to come here and they get to learn all the school routines. They get to know the campus, they get to know the administrators, all of the activities, teachers like p.e, library, humanities, and they get to meet the kindergarten teachers."

Wright goes into detail about her teaching styles with the children and what they do in class.

"We learn a lot through centers like this week are doing play centers of wal-mart, because we're learning about the letter W, but we try to do lots of hands-on activities, lots of art a, lots of just talking and singing and nursery rhymes and reading books because, you know, at their age, they like to do hands-on things," said Wright.

As of now, each Elementary School has a Pre-K Class of twenty students with 2 teachers in the classroom and the School has a way to academically track the student's progress said, Principal Brian Powell.

"We have some ways to see how well they're reading, how well they're doing in math, and also their writing. And we want to see growth and progression each year. And we're highly we're excited. And we feel very confident that over the years, next few years, they're going to be some of our leaders in the classroom." said Powell.
