LCSD Partners with MSU with Teacher Residency Program

ree

Lauderdale County School District is teaming up with Mississippi state university for a teacher residency partnership. We hear more from Sandy Reid, the Director of Curriculum on how the program will work.

“What this does is it allows people who aspire to be teachers to join this profession. And we encourage them to be a part of the residency program,” stated Reid.

The residency is for anyone in the community with a bachelor’s degree and who has a passion for teaching and enriching the youth.

“If they have a degree already, it does not have to be an education. They can apply for this, and they will end up with a master's degree free of charge, a master's degree in education,” Reid stated.

Reid said signing up for the program does not guarantee you a teaching position.

“We certainly can't guarantee. But if you join us in the residency program and you show us that excellence that we strive for, then we're more than likely going to want to recruit you.”

All residents will complete an induction camp followed by three semesters of placement-based teaching.

Reid said,” It will take about a year. They will do contact hours. They will do a residency with a mentor teacher from our district. And they will have some coursework to complete, but most of it will be online.”

A generous grant from the Mississippi Department of Education funds the full tuition, books, and testing fees for each resident admitted into the program. To sign up click the link below.
