The Meridian area is now starting to feel the effects of tropical storm IDA. The city’s public safety and Salvation Army are stepping up to be proactive to keep residents safe and fed.
Here in the meridian and Lauderdale County area, we are continuing to feel the effects of tropical storm IDA as heavy rain and wind speeds increase.
We spoke with the Public Safety Director, Doug Stephens, who says that as of this morning, there have been no reports of severe damage.
The city of Meridian is continuing to monitor the tropical storm is and is advising residents to have an emergency plan in place.
The Salvation Army is being proactive by helping residents keep groceries like canned goods and dry food in their households.
“Today we're giving out nonperishable food, cereal bags, and meat. If we feel that the community needs us. We’re going to mobilize our canteen, our mobile kitchen and we’re going to go out and feed" said Salvation Army volunteer, Alexis Hendrix.
Along with the grocery giveaway, the Salvation Army will also be providing hot meals this evening starting at five o’clock.
“We feel it's important to get these groceries out because people still need to eat amid the storm. We know people in the community are still hungry so we’re willing to help out in any way we can.”- Salvation Army volunteer Alexis Hendrix
Reports from EMEPA power company shows that around 500 customers have been affected due to the storm.
Power companies and tree removal services have been seen scouting the Meridian area to stay ahead of damages.
Coverage will continue.
