Local residents react to the Coronavirus Relief Bill being passed

Following President Trump’s recent signing of the more than $2 trillion COVID-19 relief package into law, which detailed that a second round of stimulus check will be distributed, local residents in Meridian shared their thoughts on a second economic impact payment being distributed.

As of now, the stimulus checks are to be $600 that will be sent out to adults who earn up to$75,000, along with an additional $600 dollars for each dependent child in their care. Adults with dependent children over the age of 17 are not eligible to receive a check for those dependents, and those dependents will also not receive a payment.

It has not yet been said when the IRS will begin sending out the second round of economic impact payments , but the determination of who will receive a check will be based on an individual’s 2019 tax returns.

Two local residents shared their thoughts on another round of economic impact payments to soon be distributed.

“Honestly, I think the government needs to stay out of everybody’s business, and just let things go. I think that they will be helpful to a lot of people who have been out of work and people who are struggling, and so that they are good in some aspects, but overall I just think the government needs to stay out of it and just let people work and do their own thing. Those types of things cripple people,” said Drew Hughes.

“I think they should give more money, because we’ve got a lot of people out here that actually need help and that’s actually out here struggling, and you know, -- behind on bills, because of what’s going on with the coronavirus and everything that’s happening lately. So, I thin its really going to help, and they also really need to go,” Delexia Reed.

The House of Representatives are still expected to vote on a bill to send $2,000 stimulus checks, instead ofthe $600 laid out in the bill signed by the president on Sunday.
