Local nurse gives safety tips for students during Thanksgiving holiday

Updated: Nov 23, 2020

Many school districts in the East Mississippi area will return to the traditional classroom after the Thanksgiving holiday and with that week-long vacation, officials are making students and parents aware of the precautions to take to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Lead Nurse of the Lauderdale County School District Sheri Shelby says to continue follow the three W’s--wash your hands, wear a mask and watch your distance.

“I think the main thing is they just continue to use the precautions we’re been using here at school. They are wearing a mask, they are washing their hands and they are social distancing. They may be around family members they haven’t seen in a while.”

Being around different people, families are encouraged to dine outside for fresh air and family members should bring your own dishes.

“We are going to be eating together. You may use the outside, hopefully we’ll have pretty weather and that way you won’t be closed indoors and spaces. You want to open your windows if you can and spread out as much as possible.”

Shelby advises students to play outside for this week-long break and not to let their guard down just because they have a little freedom.

“So we’ve just continued to tell them, don’t let your guard down and that they are still using those precautions as much as possible so they will be able to come back to school on Monday.”

The district has released several holiday tips on their website for families to abide by to have a safe break.
