Local residents share their thoughts on the proposed $900 billion coronavirus relief bill

Updated: Dec 22, 2020

Today in Lauderdale County, local residents shared their thoughts on congressional leaders recent agreement on a second COVID-19 economic relief package, that includes a second stimulus check, as the bill still waits to be passed.

The $900 billion coronavirus relief bill that has not yet been passed, includes $600 direct stimulus payments to adults who earn up to $75,000, and an additional $600 dollars for each dependent. The proposed bill is still awaiting the House and Senate’s vote, along with President Donald Trump’s signature to authorize it.

It has been stated that in order to receive a second stimulus check, you will not have to sign up, and it should be automatic for those who qualify, if you filed taxes in 2018 or 2019, either through direct deposit or via mail.

Two local residents shared that they hope the coronavirus relief bill is passed before the new year.

“I think they should give people the stimulus checks, whether it was $600 or $700, instead of taking too long to debate how much the amount they give the people and waiting until the government funding expires today, and then people will not get any money until next year,” said Mohamed Obeid.

“I think possible it could help boost the economy a little bit for me it won’t really affect me as much, but I think it will be a good thing that if it can help get some people out of some debt that they’re in it will be a good thing,” said Clinton Ransey.

The relief package also would include a temporary 3-hundred dollars per week in supplemental jobless benefits, which both men shared they believe would help those still in need due to the pandemic.

“I know there’s a lot of people that need the money, so I would say I think they should give them the money this year, instead of debating and waiting too long until next year,” said Obeid.

“With the way the virus has effected everyone, any little bit helps, and those whose really in need of it, I hope the best for them, and they do receive it, and it will definitely help,” said Ransey.

As of now, the proposed coronavirus relief bill has not been passed, and US lawmakers are still expected to vote on the $900 billion relief bill, which includes a possible second round of stimulus checks.
