Mayor Smith stated, “We are calling this news conference today because you know I’m sickened after this past weekend and all the shootings going on and we need to be proactive when dealing with these things.”

Mayor Jimmie Smith stated that the community needs to do its part helping make sure to keep the city safe.

"It’s about the community as a whole, we’re all involved in this. Not just one of us but all of us. We need to make sure we are doing what we need to, to make sure our community is safe.”

“This last weekend was uncalled for, unnecessary. It is something our community does not need."

Judge Markaham is using his authority to show that gun violence will not be tolerated in the community.

“If you use a gun or deadly weapon that results in the death of someone your bond is going to start at 1 million dollars.

Judge Markaham had a message to those who may know information regarding the case but don’t want to speak up.

“It may be you next, it may someone in your family next. It may be your child next. It may be your house that is shot into next.”

Meridian Police Department Detective James Legoy expressed his outrage over the shootings that occurred.

“Zy’kerioun Brown 5 years old died senselessly this weekend. I can assure everyone that our entire department is going to find out who did it. Anyone harboring these people they are going to go to jail too. anyone assisting them in hiding we’re coming after them too.

The shootings that took place over the weekend were all unrelated but each shooting took a life.

Acting Police Chief Patrick Gale said. “My heart goes out to those that lost loved ones this weekend. It’s not just a police issue but a community as a whole. We need to fight back to get our city back."

The senseless shootings that have taken place here in Meridian are all currently still under investigation. Mayor Jimmie Smith along with The Meridian Police Department is asking for the help of the community to help end the violence and to step up with information if they have it by contacting The Police Department or calling Crime Stoppers anonymously.
