Marion, MS - Public or private students in Lauderdale County, grades nine through twelve, are invited to apply for the Mayor’s Youth Council in Marion.

This is a great opportunity for students to get involved in their community and a great time to start learning about the government.

The Mayor of Marion and the leader of this council, Larry Gill, told Twin States News about the benefits of this new program.

“You get to learn a lot about how things happen. How do the roads get paved. How do we allocate funds. How does the process work? I think it gives them a leg up on what they really want to do.”

Mayor Gill also went into more depth about what exactly the council will be doing.

“We’re going to do a variety of things from volunteering to letting them sit in on different meetings that we have, and also going to other cities and listening in to their meetings, seeing how they do things.”

Twin States also asked a few students from Northeast Lauderdale why they felt getting involved in the government is important to them.

“The Youth is the future and the government is not going anywhere, so the more the youth is involved, the better off the government will be,” said C.J. Bourrage.

Hayden Donnelly says, “I think it’s really important for the youth to get involved so they have a say so on what happens to them on a day-to-day basis.”

Students can apply at the Marion Town Hall, and selections will be made at the end of October.
