Mayor proposes pay raise for Meridian Police.

Meridian, MS - Meridian police officers may soon get a raise in pay.

Meridian Mayor Jimmie Smith proposed budget at a $5,000 raise for Meridian Police Department’s current certified police officers. Mayor Smith says his proposal will help the department recruit and train a new generation of police officers.

The decision to fund the raises will ultimately be up to the City Council.

Mayor Smith wants to inform the community of the raises so residents can share their support, either for or against the idea, and help council members reach a decision on how to proceed.
