Meridian,MS - Today was a big day for the Athletic Department at Meridian Community College, as a long-awaited addition of Volleyball is finally over.
The first-ever head volleyball coach at MCC, Alex Schimelpfening, expressed his enthusiasm for the growth of Volleyball in Meridian.
“It’s kind of crazy to be honest because we’ve just seen the sport grow and been part of that like Dr Huber mentioned, we’ve just been part of the process of getting everybody introduced to the sport we grew up with. Everybody I knew played volleyball where I came from.”
Coach Schimelpfening tells Twin States News what kind of players he is looking for.
“Especially to start a program I feel like you’ve got to go for kids that are going to build a culture, and that’s kind of what we’ve done. We pride ourselves in thinking we can take pretty much any kid with passion and determination, and we can teach them all the skills they need to know.”
MCC Athletic Director, Sander Atkinson, explains the excitement of the new sport to campus.
“It’s really an exciting time, just because the growth of this sport has been so amazing to watch over the last few years. So I know this is going to be an exciting thing for this community, and for the young women of this community that are playing volleyball and falling in love with it.”
