MCC'S College 4 Kids

This week Meridian Community College kicked off its Annual Summer Enrichment Program College 4 Kids. The two-week program is geared towards children aged 6-12 on the campus. This year they have approximately 460 kids participating.

"College for kids is an event that we host every summer at the community college. And it's an opportunity to bring younger and younger students onto our campus to show them the facility they're going to learn a little bit while they're here," said Brandon Dewes.

Dewes says the program lasts for two weeks and students have the opportunity to understand that learning can be fun and engaging and gave some examples of the type of classes they can take.

"There are drama classes there and music classes. We've got classes that range across a broad spectrum of whatever it is that these young folks might be interested in," stated Dewes.

The Art Instructor worked with students to help them recreate some of the best paintings that were done in the 1800s and says they do something new every day.

Diane Agnew said," The kids have done great. They're very engaged. Most of these children that are in this particular class already do art at home. They are already if they're not painting, they're coloring and they're sketching and they're doing other things. So they have a real keen interest. And they're doing great."

Dewes says that he loves taking part in the program and seeing the kids enjoying themselves as they are learning new skills.

"We want to make sure that we're helping to create lifelong learners right here in our community in Meridian. And we want them to know that they can come and do that right here at MCC."
