Meridian Community College is celebrating their First Generational Students as a way to encourage them along their college journey. For Student Earron Clayton, being a first generational student is an exciting achievement. “I have to pinch myself because it’s a goal that I’ve been trying to reach for a couple of years, and so now that I’m finally here, it’s like I have to pinch myself, like it’s real, I’m here.”
Clayton expressed although school and life in general can sometimes be hard to balance, she knows it will pay off in the long run. “I’m working towards getting my degree in Media Broadcasting, I want to do journalist; like backpack journalist, or maybe producer, or something like that, just something with the Broadcasting world.”
Also being a first-generation college student in her family, Adult Education and Mi-Best College and Career navigator Rhonda Smith, emphasized the impact she wants to make on the students’ lives. “Being able to identify with our students on the struggles that they have, it gives me a great pleasure to be helping them be able to get their education, so they can make a difference in the world too.”
MCC is proud to celebrate its first-generation students, as well as their many other students, as they continue to help them spread their wings, and sore to their future endeavors.
