Meridian, MS - Meridian Community College held a flag raising ceremony in honor of National POW/MIA Recognition Day. A day Vice President of Engagement Cedric Gathings feels is very important. “We wanted to have a moment just to reflect and be thankful for those people who sacrificed their lives, just so that we can be free, and be comfortable in the way of life that we live in today.”

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, “As of May 22, over 81,000 U.S. service members are still missing."

As some of those members are a part of the younger generation, Meridian Community College President Tom Huebner considers it a gift to help impact the lives of young people. “I can’t help but think about that when I walk down the halls of our college and see students who are 18, 19, 20, and 21, and think about what in previous times, what they were called to do, it’s humbling to me.”

He is also proud to see students and the community come together in remembrance. “We have to come together, and we have to remember many gave all for us, and so that sacrifice is meaningful, and so it’s important for us here at the college to recognize the men and women who serve on our behalf.”

Meridian Community College and people in the community are remembering prisoners of war while also raising awareness for those that are currently still missing.
