Meridian Community College: My College Cares Day

It's that time of year again for Meridian Community Colleges’ My College Cares Day. More than 500 Students, faculty, and Staff members went out and about in the Community to provide Community Services throughout the city. Brandon Dewease, the Associate Dean of Student Engagement tells us more.

"You know, we're a Community College. This is our intention to reach back into the spaces and the places that support what we do here on our Community College campus by going and sharing our time, our energy, and our resources. So that's what we're doing today," stated Dewease.

From picking up trash to doing some repainting and helping out retirement home residents My College Cares Day volunteers share how it feels to be able to give back to the community.

"It feels great helping out the community. Now, that the season is over we are able to walk around and help out people around the community," said Joshua Taylor.

Another volunteer Brandon Epting said," Well, it's a great feeling. I mean, you know, just being able to serve and help others, you know, it's awesome. A lot of people do a lot of things for the program at MCC. So just being able to give back to the community and just serve others."

The My College Cares has become an anticipated tradition for both the Community College and the Community.

"We love to have the students here. They came last year and did a lot of work here on campus, outside, and inside. So we look forward to them being here. Our elders look forward to it all. So they're just a great help and just a breath of fresh air. It's also nice to have our community involved with us. We are all about engaging with our community. So we just really appreciate of MCC and we think this program is wonderful and so I'm very grateful for it," said Robyn Stephen the Executiveceutive Director of Aldergate.

Candace Rayner, MCC Math Teacher had this to say about the My College Cares Day," I just think it's important to us that we show the community that we care about them. It's a time for us just to give back. It's a time for us to socialize and get to know each other on a different level, just not in a classroom. We enjoy this every year, so I look forward to it. So it's just a great day.
