The Meridian Police Department is now beginning to prepare for a possible uptick in crime, as the holiday season draws near.
MPD police chief, Chris Read, shared that later this month, Meridian residents will begin to see an increased police presence throughout the city, specifically in shopping areas, like Meridian Crossroads shopping center, and Uptown Meridian Mall.

Chief Read shared that the increased police presence is to discourage people from committing crimes in these shopping areas, which will see an uptick in foot traffic during the holidays.
“We know that there’s going to be an influx of people coming and shopping, and coming to the city of Meridian at different shopping venues, and so having said that the police department, we’re planning on putting additional officers that are specifically designated for certain venues throughout the city. They’re not going to be answering calls, unless there’s an officer that needs assistance or something like that, along with our regular patrol shifts,” said Chief Read.
He also offered preventative measures to holiday shoppers, to limit their chances of becoming a victim of theft.
“I think with the citizens some good measures is whenever their out and shopping and stuff –try not to keep those items visible in the vehicle if at all possible. Lock them in the trunk. Put them in the trunk area where they’re not visible,” said Read.

The Meridian Police Department will begin its increased police presence in those commercial shopping areas throughout the city on November 26 and it will continue through to December 26.
