Meridian, MS - The Temple Theatre is celebrating its 100-year birthday anniversary since first being constructed by the Hamasa Shriners in 1923. “It’s one of the best buildings here in Meridian Mississippi, and one of the best things that the Hamasa Shriners ever accomplished here in Meridian.”
In 2009, the Temple Theatre was sold to Theatre Manager Roger Smith, who emphasized the theatre as being a staple to the community. “It’s really a community theater for all the people. I’ve been here 15 years every day, and the temple is the largest and only theatre that has remained open since it was constructed.”
Being open for 100 years does not come easy, as Smith also expressed the need for donations, especially following a recent fire by a shorted-out air conditioner. “We do need donations for upkeep, I mean just to replace that air conditioner will be a thousand dollars at least.”
Ward 5 Councilwoman Tyesha Bell Lindsey was very excited to celebrate the Temple Theatre. “It’s just the most marvelous, remarkable item that we can ever showcase to the community, to the State, and the states around us.”
City officials and residents enjoyed coming out to celebrate the staple in the community which is the historic temple theatre.
