Mississippians may not have to deal with snow storms or blizzards but the South does have to deal with freezing temperatures and the typical winter weather. Meteorologists state that this week Mississippi may receive the coldest air of the season. Here are a few things you need to know to stay warm and prepared for the upcoming freezing temperatures.

" We're asking people to take the next couple of days to be sure their pipes are insulated properly and to make sure that they have adequate shelter for their pets and cover those exposed plants and when you go out and cover all exposed skin. There are going to be some wind chill factors throughout this weekend that may be in the negative degrees. So be very cautious of how much time you spend outside," stated Doug Stephens the Director of Public Safety. Residents are not only preparing for the Christmas Holiday but also preparing for the freezing weather that’s to come. "Stock up on your stuff, if it freezes like it in this early sixties when I was around you have to be prepared and you make sure you got all your coats and our your your your quilts and everything," said Local Resident, Dale Welborn. Local Resident and Plumber, Jacob Norris said," I would say make sure everything's wrapped. You know, you have insulation on your pipes. Make sure to keep the faucet dripping." Barber & son's plumbing owner said cold temperatures and wind can cause pipes problems, causing them to burst if you don’t take the necessary steps. "Common mistakes people make this time of year is they don't let their faucets drip and they don't do the work necessary prior to this time of year," stated Gary Barber. The cold weather not only affects your home but also has an impact on how your car runs. "Make sure to let your car warm up before you just get in and take off,let it run to get all your lubricants up to temperature before, you know, you go to take off," said Randy Thompson, Owner of Thompson Auto Repair. With the low temperatures approaching being prepared is the best way to ensure you stay warm and safe.
