Meridian MS - On the same day of a mass shooting at a school in Nashville Tennessee that killed at least six people, Mississippi lawmakers passed senate bill 2079 which will allow teachers to be armed in school.
Lauderdale county school district superintendent Dr. John-Mark Cain shares his thought on the bill being passed. “I think really and truly what the city is trying to do is increase the security in schools. But I think each district will have to examine that on their own, look at the liability issues and make on with its insurance that, you know, concerns. And so, I think it's going to be a district level decision.”
Although opting into the program is not a requirement, dr. Cain also tells if it is something the district will look into? “We will also look at how it impacts us. But talking with, you know, with where we stand now, again, having those trained as our rooms on each campus, we're lucky to have them and we're happy to have them. And as of right now, that's what we're going to continue to do.”
Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun believes the bill could be beneficial if signed into law. “Having the ability to legally arm staff member or teacher that is there on the campus can be a great deterrent to individuals who decide they want to come on to a school campus and do harm to students and teachers.”
Right now, it’s said that the bill is in the hands of Governor Tate Reeves. And if or when he decides to sign it, it’s said to take effect on July 1st.
