The Mississippi State University (MSU) extension here in Meridian has been celebrating Physician Assistant (PA) week. The program decided to give back in October, which is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness month, by collecting items to help domestic violence victims.

The PA program at MSU is the first public Physician Assistant program in the state of Mississippi. The students enrolled in the program are the inaugural class and will receive their white coats in the spring.
“ All around the world PA's are celebrating National PA week and they are doing things
to increase awareness about the profession”, stated Professor Tara Milligan. “So, our students chose to do a community service project by collecting donations for Care Lodge which is a Domestic Violence center.”

The students decorated donation boxes that will be placed on both MSU campuses in Meridian. You can donate items like toothbrushes, shampoo, and clothing.
MSU’s Community Outreach co-chair and member of the PA program, Kait White, explained why it was important for them to give back to the community.
“This will help because it will give victims a way to get back on their feet and get integrated back into the community after going through a hard and challenging time”, said White. “As a PA we want to make sure all the unmet needs in our community are being met as much as we possibly can.”

The drop-off locations will be open from October 6th until October 20th. You can visit the MSU Bulldog shop at 1000 MS-19 Meridian, MS, or call (601) 484-0100 for more information about the collection drive.
