On Monday, Governor Tate Reeves announced his plans for Mississippi to opt out of the $300 unemployment supplemental benefits.

In response to Governor Reeves’s plans to end pandemic-related benefits, Mississippi Democratic Party Chairman, Tyree Irving released a statement advising that the move would hurt Mississippians recovering from the effects of the pandemic.

“Taking away unemployment benefits from poor people is heartless and it’s cruel and Reeve’s is doing this for political reasons and you’re fostering a myth that poor people are poor because they do want to work,” said Irving.

Irving goes on to say, ‘If every American, not just every Mississippian, but if every American showed up right now and asked for a job they couldn’t get it because the jobs are not there yet.’

Mississippi is one among many GOP lead states to make this decision. Supplemental benefits are expected to end next month.
