THIS BELOW-ZERO WEATHER IS NOT SOMETHING MISSISSIPPIANS ARE USED TO WAKING UP TO. OUR DANNY TODD SEES HOW THE FRIGID WEATHER IS AFFECTING PEOPLE HERE, AND HOW THEY ARE ADJUSTING.
It appears as if Santa is bringing more than gifts to the Deep South this winter. We speak with local residents as they're affected by this arctic cold in Mississippi.
ALBERT LAWSON: LOCAL RESIDENT says "I woke up this morning with negative wind chill. We had plans to go to Tennessee, to the mountains for Christmas, which we had to cancel because I have pipes that could burst and freeze. I have animals to take care of. And we live here in Mississippi. It's not supposed to be that cold."
Individuals aren't the only ones having to adjust to this unusual weather event. Some businesses must be out in the cold no matter what.
TERRY LEWIS- OWNER OF LEWIS WRECKER SERVICES says "We are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No matter if it's Christmas morning or Christmas night, we're on call here, and ready to answer the call for people that, unfortunately, have accidents or have a breakdown and need to be towed off the side of the road."
Terry Lewis added that this is the job they signed up for and he wants his customers to know that they matter. Whatever the situation he stressed, being in this weather is dangerous and how important it is to have the proper gear.
TERRY LEWIS says " With the cold weather, the headgear, gloves, insulated boots, good thick jackets, and layering is important. Layering is good because that way you can take off and put on as need be."
This weather event is definitely something we in the south aren't used to, but we hope everyone adjusts well, has a merry Christmas, and stays weather alert for the remaining of this freeze warning.
