Month of the Military Child

jroby5

Meridian MS - The month of April is nationally recognized as the Month of the Military Child. An event for military families was held at Northeast Elementary School.

Family & Community Engagement Coordinator Linda Weir explains why the military children need the support. "Kids go through so much with different with their families when they have to move and other things. And it shows the students that we value them and what they're going through."

The support doesn’t just come from school events. Military and Family Life Counselor Kendra Blakely says it’s up to the community as well. “I think there's always room to definitely be more supportive, to show up, to acknowledge. I think that as a community, definitely just being there. I mean, that's the most important thing, especially with kids.”

School Liaison Larry Mullins stated that as the family moves, the children need help transitioning to their new environment. “You don't always get to come in at the beginning of the school year when it's convenient to come in and meet people, you come in at all times the middle of the year in the schools. It's important for the schools to help them transition in.”

The school says they are proud to engage with its military families and give them the support they need.
