MPSD prepares students to switch to virtual learning after Thanksgiving Break

The Meridian Public-School District has announced that all students in the district will transition to virtual learning after Thanksgiving Break.

The district's decision was made due to an increased number of positive COVID-19 cases in Lauderdale County. This week, teachers across the district are currently preparing students for their shift back to virtual learning following Thanksgiving Break, for the remainder of this year.

Yolanda Davis, the principal at Poplar Springs Elementary, and Heather Hodges , a first grade teacher at Poplar Springs, shared that they both believe students are prepared for the transition to virtual learning. “We have taken the necessary steps starting last week, to make contact with families to ensure students who need devices have them. So, we’ve taken those devices and issued them out to make sure students have access to them. We’ve taken the steps to provide students with the opportunity to go through the software that we will be using, whether it’s Zoom, Google Classroom, Seesaw, to give them that practice they will need to be fully prepared,” said Yolanda Davis, principal at Poplar Springs Elementary “We’ve been using their devices at school, so they’re prepared a lot more now than they were before with their devices. So, I think they’ll be ready once they have to start on their own the week after thanksgiving, and kind of be able to help guide their parents through where they’re supposed to be, and they’re just a little more familiar with it,” said Heather Hodges, first grade teacher at Poplar Springs Elementary.

Saying in addition, that students will be eased into the transition, as they maintain the same class schedule virtually as they would with in-person classes.

“ We’re trying to keep our school day virtually, just as it would be in the classroom. So, we’re going to follow our schedule throughout the day with our reading block, our math block, things like that. So, we keep them on track as much as we can,” said Hodges.
