Meridian, Miss. - A cultural exhibition celebrating Native American culture is on full display at the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience museum. The exhibit gives rich cultural background and dispels stereotypes by detailing the works of 13 contemporary Native American artists through visual artwork. The MAEX curator, Stacey Wilson says this exhibit gives the public an opportunity to understand of the true identity of Native Americans and their experience.
“So these exhibits are great, just because they can highlight the Native American community that’s local to here. But then it also talks about the stereotypes that Native Americans face every day. So it's basically explaining and detailing their culture, says Wilson.
Wilson says the goal of the exhibit is to educate the public and is also a direct invitation to experience the culture in person at the annual Choctaw Indian fair, this summer.
“We do this exhibit in the summer as a cross-promotion. We know the Choctaw Indian Fair is in the summer, so this is a way for us to send people their way, but to send people our way to see the exhibition.”
The exhibit will run until August 7th. The Choctaw Indian Fair will run this summer from July 14th through the 17th.
