National School Bus Safety Week

csims121

Meridian, MS - The Lauderdale County School District has numerous bus routes all throughout the county.

Hundreds of kids depend on school buses to make it to and from school every day of the week.

Director of Safety and Transportation, Russell Keene, explains why this week is so important.

“School bus safety is not only a reminder for our drivers about safety, but it’s also a reminder about our students, to remind them about the safety rules that they need to follow on the school bus. It’s just a reminder for people all the way around. In the mornings you’re going to have people out, and you just need to be on the lookout for them.” Mr. Keene also tells Twin States News’ about the two brand new school buses LCSD just got today, and why a school bus is the safest vehicle for kids to travel in.

“That’s why we use school buses, they are the safest form of travel for our students. There are all kinds of safety features that are on these buses. This particular bus has four cameras on the inside with sound audio recording capabilities.”

Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun also expressed his thoughts on school bus safety.

“The thing to remember when you see a school bus on the road is the fact that there are children there. Whether the children are getting on the bus, getting off the bus or riding the bus. We as drivers should make sure that we are always thinking about following the laws, whether it pertains to stop signs, speed limit, but also around school buses.”
