A new device called AdaptDx Pro also known as “Thea” is now being used at Primary Eyecare of Meridian detecting a disease called age-related macular degeneration or AMD. This is a disease of the retina which can cause loss of vision for older patients.
“This device allows us to detect damage in the magula earlier than we can even see it,” said Owner of Primary Eyecare of Meridian Dr. Minh Duong. “It may look healthy on the top layer, but underneath if they’re warning signs, this technology can help us detect those warning signs and get a headstart on any preventive treatment.”
Just a click of a button, Thea takes patients through a six minute screening for thorough eye detention. The device goes through a process called dark adaption to search for any signs of the disease.

“The technology that we use is artificial intelligence,” said Duong. “The software that is integrated uses the technology called dark adaption uses a flicker and lights to detect any kind of response and you have to click a button when you see that response.”
Dr. Duong says there are several lifestyle changes to make to slow down the AMD disease. He also says chances increase for patients over the age of 50.
“There are foods that we can eat--diets and of course nonsmoking is always key to any kind of retina issues,” said Duong. “It’s just a lifestyle--just telling the patient that this might happen.”
Primary Eyecare of Meridian began using the device early last month.
