New Pharmacy in Newton located at the old Fred's location

A new pharmacy named Smith's Pharmacy is in business in Newton. After the closing of Fred’s in Newton last year, many residents were left with small options filling their prescriptions. The pharmacy is in the location of the old Fred’s.

“If they didn’t go to Walmart, they had to drive to either Decatur, Union, Meridian or into Forest which was rather inconvenient for people,” says Pharmacist Greg Ware.

The owner, Richard Smith saw a need for an additional pharmacy in the area.

“Richard Smith, who has had pharmacies in Newton and Union before saw that there was a need for an independent pharmacy in the community so he approached me about the idea of him opening the pharmacy and I would be the pharmacist here.”

With COVID-19 in effect, the pharmacy offers either walk in or drive through services for less contact.

“We have a drive through window set up like a bank so people don’t have to come in if they don’t want to. We have our screen down here. We will be wearing masks and we just want to make it as easy as possible for our customers and patients.”

The small business plans to serve a variety of Newton and surrounding areas.
