New Unemployment Numbers Released For The Week Of May 30

Today, the Department of Labor released new numbers on unemployment claims filed around the country, with the number of unemployment claims finally dropping below 2 million since the end of March.


The week of May 30th was the 11th week straight that unemployment claims were in the millions, and in the week of March 28th unemployment hit a high of 6.8 million.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic began to impact unemployment claims in the month of March, the US Department of Labor had never recorded more than one million unemployment claims filed.


Last Week 1,877,000 Americans filed for initial unemployment benefits, which is 249,000 less claims filed since the previous week. In the state of Mississippi, 23,945 unemployment claims filed were filed that week, which is 89 more claims filed than the week prior to.

As many local businesses reopen, hoping to encourage the support of these businesses in Meridian and Lauderdale County, the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation, the city of Meridian and Lauderdale County have announced a campaign in attempt to aid in restarting the local economy, named the “Restart, Restore, Recover“ campaign.

In a statement EMBDC president and CEO Bill Hannah said, “We want to responsibly restart our local economy, help restore jobs and services, and recover our quality of life”.


The EMBDC is encouraging businesses, individuals, and governmental agencies to use and promote the logo for the restart, restore, recover campaign to show support in restarting the local economy.
