Newton County Elementary Pinwheel for Peace

Updated: Jun 15, 2022

In today’s world where so much is going on; children don’t always get to express their feelings or be heard. Newton County Elementary (NCES) made sure that their students got that chance. The school participated in the international project “Pinwheels for Peace” today.

“The children can write and draw any of their feelings on the pinwheels”, said NCES art teacher, Beth Jenkins. “They can own up to them by signing their name or leaving them anonymous as they are planted outside.”

On one side of the pinwheel, children express how they feel about things like war and peace, tolerance, and living in harmony with others. On the other side, the children draw a visual representation of their feelings.

NCES 6th grader, Eli Slay, expressed how he believes the pinwheels are helping others.

“I feel like it gives them a good bit of joy that people care about them. It just gives them a spark of hope in times of need. It also gives me a good bit of hope to help people and make them feel good about themselves", said Slay.

The project started internationally in 2005. In the last five years, there have been over 3 million pinwheels being seen spinning in more than 3,000 locations.
