Newton County School District releases Safe Return Plan

The Newton County School District has announced they will be opening their school year on August 3rd. The plan states students will attend school on different days according to their grade. The week of August 10th, the district plans are to have all grades on campus Monday-Friday.

“We’ll be staggered. Basically we’ll have 50 percent of our kids each day. On Monday and Tuesday, we’ll have a PD day for our staff on Wednesday and half of our kids on Thursday and Friday," says superintendent J.O. Amis.

The district is requiring everyone to follow guidelines set. This includes good hygiene and wearing a mask which can be provided by the school.

“We will be putting in hand sanitizer stations. We’ll have a station for the kids to check in and for us to check their temperature. We are going to require masks to be worn on the school buses with staff and students and in school. We are asking that parents provide transportation of their own kid, but we will provide transportation.”

Due to COVID-19, meals will be served differently to reduce social transmission.

“At breakfast, when they get here in the morning, they will report to their first period class and the breakfast will be provided for them to eat inside the classrooms and then at lunch we will social distance them through the lunch line and then return back to class to eat their lunch in the classroom.”

Parents are welcome to complete an online survey to give input on the new COVID-19 plan that’s due by midnight tonight. A compiled report will be forwarded to the NC School Board as soon as possible in case any action should be taken at Monday's Board Meeting.
