No more Mask Mandate for Meridian Public School District

One school district in The Queen City is lifting its mask mandate due to a decrease in cases.

Things may be slowly going back to normal as Meridian Public School district has announced that starting today they will no longer require masks to be worn indoors. Matt Davis the Director of Public Relations tells us what led to this decision.

“Well, the board of trustees and Dr. Carter, we met last week, and after just some discussion and looking at data that had come from the CDC, recommendations they had, and then also just some of the trends we started seeing on our campuses, “said Davis.

Previously the mask mandate stated that Faculty, Staff, and Students must wear a mask indoors and now that is an option.

"With the number of cases going down, we felt like that this was a good time for us to be able to give students, teachers, staff, and those parents of those students a choice as to whether or not they wanted to wear a mask or they felt comfortable not wearing a mask," stated Davis.

Davis says students and staff members now have the option to wear a mask but their sanitation regime will continue as the same.

"We're still going to have a hand sanitizer available on campuses for students to use and things of that nature. None of our safety measures are really going to change as far as cleaning the campuses. But again, we'll have masks available if there needs to be a need for someone to wear a mask if they choose to do that."

A Meridian resident I spoke with who wishes to remain off-camera said they agree that it should be a choice if you want to wear a mask or not. And other residents I spoke with disagree.

Randy Lewis said," No, I think they should keep their mask on at school if possible."

Ricco Radley stated, "Yes they should keep the mask on because covid is something serious."

Davis says if they begin to see an increase in the number of cases the mask mandate could be reimplemented.
