Nonprofit remains on the go in new year

The year might have changed, but community service in Meridian remains the same. From food, to education to keeping clothes on many backs, the Wesley House Community Center has a mission in providing essentials in the community.

“We have coats, we have sweaters, whatever is needed to keep them warm,” said Jowanda McCoy, Clothing Room Coordinator at the Wesley House.

Each week the house sets up shop at the Playground for Jesus to give clothes to those in need. Shoppers can come five at a time to pick and choose for social distancing measures.

“We sort them like you see now based on men. Women, children-depending on what it is," said McCoy. "After that, we go to the park on Friday from 9 to 12 and the public is allowed to come to the park to shop like they would on the inside.”

The Wesley House continues to keep food in many bellies through their weekly food distributions on Wednesdays. A 1500 pound donation of chicken from Tyson and Extra Tables gives them a helping hand.

“We've been very blessed. The participation of the community in helping support our food pantry, so organizations like this-the Mississippi Food Network," said David Schultz, Executive Director at the Wesley House. "There’s so many different venues available for us to get products and make it available to those in need.”
