Northeast High School mourns the loss of football player, officials speak on his legacy

The Trojan family mourns the passing of their own Class of 2021 Senior Corey Moss. A teammate, a student, a classmate and a friend are just a few roles 17-year-old Corey Moss played at Northeast Lauderdale High School.

“He had one of the best personalities I’ve met in my ten years of education. His smile would light up the whole campus instantly and he’s missed greatly,” says Principal Joshua Herrington.

Moss played many positions for the Trojans. Coach Gowdy says Moss stood out to him once he began coaching the team.

“The first player that stood out to me--I didn’t know any of the kids by name was number 17 Corey Moss,” says Trojan Head Coach Maurice Gowdy. “A passionate player--he played multiple positions--defense of line, linebacker, he was being lined up all over the field and the thing that I saw was his tenacity.”

According to the principal, Moss had a great impact on everyone he came in contact with.

“You couldn’t be around Corey for five minutes and not remember him and not know who he is and him not leave an impact on you,” Herrington explains. “It’s a great loss for us and our community. Our students, our teachers and the community has been rallying together.”

Information regarding the cause of death has not yet been released. In addition, the school is offering counseling services to students and teachers impacted by his passing. The Trojan family says Moss’ legacy will be honored and never be forgotten at Northeast Lauderdale High School. #17Strong.
