Northeast Middle School has broken ground on their upcoming solar panel project. The school is one of few schools in Mississippi to transfer to the use of solar energy. The Superintendent of Lauderdale County Schools gives us more detail.

"So today is we got our solar panels being installed. The first part of this will be getting in our mounting stations, and it looks like this will be about a two-week project to get everything installed," stated John Kane.

In all, there will be about 400 solar panels that will be installed here in this area behind the school.

"So far, this is the only one in Lauderdale county, and quite possibly this may be the first in Mississippi.

The superintendent tells us why they decide to convert to solar energy.

"So this is a part of our energy savings plan that we've got for the district. This was just a part of it."

The solar panels will produce 60% to 80% of the power needs at Northeast Middle School, Superintendent tells us what the future looks like for using solar energy for other Lauderdale County Schools

"So we're going to look at this and maybe model it and try to apply it to some of our other campuses. That funds become available."

Designed to work on cloudy days, in part sun, and even in wintery environments, solar panels can generate a significant amount of power. Solar power systems offer a dependable source of unlimited energy and save taxpayers money.
