Ochsner Rush Medical Center offering 3D Mammography Exams.

jroby5

Meridian, MS - Ochsner Rush Medical center is now offering 3D Mammography exams, and according to Ashley Gibson, who is the Mammography Quality Control Coordinator; the new technology makes it easier to detect breast cancer. “It detects 65% more invasive breast cancers, it reduces the number of callbacks than 2D, which means less worry and time spent with follow up exam.”

Gibson expressed how the cutting-edge technology gives a more detailed examination, leading to more accurate results. “The ability to exam that breast tissue one layer at a time. It puts it in a stack of very thin layers or slices for our radiologist to view; It’s kind of like looking at a book. You have to look at the whole thing, not just the cover.”

While emphasizing the important of women getting their yearly exam, Gibson also stressed monthly self-examination. “It also is very important for women to do that self-breast exam monthly, so that they can actually feel the difference when there is something in the breast.”

As breast cancer does not only effect women, Gibson encourages men as well to inform their doctor when noticing any changes in the breast.

Ochsner says they want to continue to raise awareness, informing the public about breast cancer exams and early detection, as it can help save lives.
