This week is National Fire Prevention Week, running from October 4 – October 10, and firefighters educate children, adults, and teachers on how to stay safe in case of a fire.
This year, the National Fire Protection Association also known as the NFPA has a campaign for National Fire Prevention Week , which is “serve up fire safety in the kitchen”, hoping to educate people on important actions they can take to keep themselves, and those around them, safe in the kitchen. According to the NFPA, cooking is the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Twin States spoke with Lauderdale County’s Fire Coordinator on steps you can take to prevent fires in the kitchen.

“You should always have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen. Never leave food on top of ta stove cooking, whenever you’re not there, and then make sure that everything is turned off. But, probably the most important part is make sure that you’re cleaning your stove, cleaning the oven, cleaning the grease off the top and arounds the walls and different things of that nature, because it all adds –if you do have a fire breakout,” said Allen Dover, Lauderdale County’s Fire Coordinator.
Each year, Fire Prevention Week is observed during the week of October 9, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, that began on October 8, 1871.
