Poplar Springs Elementary switches to Virtual Learning

Updated: Sep 3, 2021

This morning Poplar Springs Elementary in the Meridian Public School District switched to virtual learning after COVID safety concerns. The school district released a press release stating that with the number of teachers and students testing positive, face-to-face learning has become difficult.

We spoke with Poplar Springs academic counselor who gave us and parents insight on how the school is handling the matter and the efforts they're taking to keep kids learning

“Poplar Springs as school follows our district protocol and our district makes their decision based on CDC guidelines and keeping our students safe. The online resources that are being sent out to parents and family can be found in google classrooms that include: Seesaw, that are activities that are assigned by teachers, Get Epic, which is an online library where students can find books that meet their interest and that are on their independent reading level, and also Storyline online which is a different platform for students to hear books read out loud by a teacher", said Academic Advisor Makenzie Woodard.

For parents concerned with whether their child is falling behind, Poplar Springs offers tutoring to any child who may need it.

“While we know that nothing can ever compare to in-person learning in the classroom we did see success last year with virtual platforms. Each teacher has office hours that you can reach to work with them individually and that's how they will be reaching children through tutoring who need extra support."- Academic Advisor, Makenzie Woodard

For students who do not have internet access at their homes, a paper option is offered by the school as well as hotspot locations throughout Meridian that school will help connect the student to.

“We can’t thank parents enough for being involved in their child's learning and being so supportive to both faculty, staff teachers, all within the school as we navigate in such uncertain times." - Academic Advisor, Makenzie Woodard

Poplar Springs Elementary will return to in-person learning on September 7th.
