Preparing Homes for Winter Weather.

jroby5

Meridian, MS - As people are getting their last-minute holiday shopping done, Greg Chatham of Lauderdale County Emergency Services is encouraging residents that now is also the time to prepare for the winter weather. “You never know what Mother Nature is going to throw at you, because it could be 60 one day and 25 the next, so now’s the time to prepare.”

As the National Weather Service predicts a “Wetter than average” winter, Chatham, emphasized the importance of protecting pipes during the winter season. “Go to your local hardware store, your plumbing supply store, get your pipe wrap, your tape; You don’t want to be out there on a 35-degree night; when the temperature is dropping, it’s going into the 20’s, and you’re out there with a flashlight trying to wrap last minute pipes.”

He also warns about overheating lights and candles when decorating for the holidays. “Around Christmas everybody seems to be lighting, be careful, an open flame, with pets and small children, or draperies, you can burn a house down quickly.”

Speaking of holiday lighting, Philip Rumery of Meridian advises checking all electricals as well. “Check all those electricals, and make sure that everything is good, ensure that your lights are in good condition, or new, that way you don’t take any kind of chance, and definitely don’t daisy chain them.”

As Winter Weather Preparedness Day is set for December 6th, residents are encouraged to use caution, and that now is the time to prepare their houses for the winter season.
