Preserving The Queen City

The Meridian Architectural Trust held its first lunch and learn of a series of six on Tuesday, in hopes to educate the community on the importance of preserving and revamping communities and districts in Meridian

Meridian Architectural Trust President Sara Johnson explained the importance of the community's involvement:

“So, Meridian Architectural Trust; we really believe that preserving our story across the community is vital to understanding who we are as a community”, said Johnson. “And our history is embodied in those buildings. And every time we lose a building, we're losing a little piece of our history.”

Meridian took on the project of “rebirthing” the downtown area by revamping and bringing in new businesses like the Three-foot Brewing Co. and the historic Three-foot hotel.

Community Development Director Craig Hitt believes the architectural organization could help in continuing that rebirth.

“We have what I consider to be a tremendous amount of energy in downtown. We have a lot of interest in vacant buildings that are downtown. I met with someone this morning, in fact, that's looking at one of the buildings as a possibility of doing something with it in the future", stated Hitt. “So, it's very encouraging what we see downtown and the excitement that people see in being a part of downtown Meridian, Mississippi.”

The next Meridian Architectural Trust lunch and learn will be held in June. A specific date will be announced closer to the event.
