Quitman School District receiving shipments of technology devices

The Quitman School District is in the process of receiving shipments of technology devices for teachers and students. These devices come from the Mississippi Department of Education as apart of their MDE program called Mississippi Connects. The Mississippi Legislature has allocated $200 million for two new laws for the program.

“One was a Senate Bill that they passed back in March called Senate Bill 3034 and there was also a House Bill passed back in that time frame and it was called House Bill 1788,” said Technology Coordinator John Korzenko.

The Senate Bill provides $150 million to school districts to pay for computer devices for students and teachers; while the House Bill provides $50 million to districts to help expand internet access to students living in underserved areas.

978 chromebooks were purchased for all Quitman students while teachers received new laptops. The district will be distributing the devices as soon as possible, but are waiting n additional equipment.

“That other equipment is basically charging carts that also disinfect the devices as well. So you put them in the cart and you can charge them up and run a disinfected cycle on there that disinfects the chromebooks.”

The district is not sure is the students will be able to take the devices home as of now, but they are supplying outdoor wireless connection to students without connections at their homes.
