Hundreds of vehicles were lined up today at the Lauderdale County Ag Center to receive a food box full of produce and other food items. An 18-wheeler was packed with around 1,400 boxes to hand out to residents.
This food giveaway came about when the Mississippi Crisis Foundation contacted the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department a few weeks back offering an expansion of food distributions to the county. Volunteers were in attendance to help make sure every vehicle received a box.
“We only got one 18-wheeler this week and we're going to ask for two next week because obviously our community is in need for this food,” said Sheriff Billy Sollie. “When I arrived here at 8 this morning there were already cars in the parking lot. We were anticipating over 1000 cars this morning trying to seek some relief from the frustration we’re in right now.”
Sheriff Sollie says they anticipate this program to last for several weeks and will make the public aware of the next giveaway.
