Retail Stores make safety adjustments for Tax Free Weekend

Each year in the state of Mississippi the last weekend in July, shoppers see a decrease at checkout on select items. This year, stores have made a few adjustments to ensure safety during tax free weekend.

If workers notice an increase of customers, they will try to limit the excessive traffic both inside and outside the store.

“Usually we’ll have someone at the door and we’ll tell them to hold for a second so we can get others to come out and we’ll let someone else come in,” says Hibbett Sports manager Celandra Ruffin.

“During tax free weekend, we have to keep the 6 foot separation, we have the store marked off. We’re limiting 35 people in the store at a time,” says David’s Uniforms manager Heather Garrison.

There will be limitations on fitting rooms.

“You can still try on clothes in the dressing room,” says Garrison. “We are cleaning the dressing rooms after every customer, but we do ask if all possible to wear a mask. Once they try it on, we try to hang it in different spots just to let it air out.”

Even though an uncertain school year is just weeks away, some stores encourage parents to buy back to school clothing as they normally would.

“We’re suggesting to the customers is buy three outfits for right now, just so if you do go back to school, you’ll have something to get started with,” says Garrison.
