MERIDIAN, Miss. - Democratic candidates Jimmie Smith, Joseph Norwood and Tyeasha “Ty” Bell Lindsey came out on top last night in the democratic runoff election.
Mayoral candidate Jimmie Smith claimed 58% of the vote against incumbent Percy Bland. He says he will continue trying to gain more votes for the June 8th election.
“The platform is simple. It’s about taking care of the citizens of Meridian, making sure that these roads are paved and the streets are cleaned and everything else they need," said Smith. "We’re going to serve the public.”
City Council Ward 3 candidate Joseph Norwood claimed 67% of the vote against incumbent Fannie Johnson. He plans to go door to door over the next few weeks to seek people’s concerns about the city.
“Everyone’s complaints are infrastructure, roads and crime. I look to work closely with the mayor’s office and the county supervisors to provide better services for the city," Norwood explained.
Claiming 65% of the vote, Tyeasha “Ty” Bell Lindsey was victorious over Allan “Al” Willis in the runoff. Lindsey says she plans to be a voice for the community if she takes the City Council Ward 5 seat.
“I'm excited about meeting more with the people in Ward 5 and just trying to get to each door and just bring back hope and life in this community in the City of Meridian.”
All three candidates will face off against the republican party in the June 8th general election.
