This week is dedicated for parents to research the different options available for their child’s schooling. From public, private, and homeschooling the National School Choice week helps parents to decide what will work best for their children.

Earlier this week Governor Tate Reeves announced that January 23-29,2022 would be proclaimed as School Choice Week in Mississippi.
“My strong support of school choice is based on one simple philosophy. I believe every child deserves an opportunity to receive a quality education”, said Reeves.

The Meridian Classical Center of Learning (MCCL) is an enrichment program that supports parents in homeschooling.
Two days a week homeschooled children come into the center for a “normal” school day and on the other three days of the week, the student will complete assignments at home.
“Homeschooling gives you a lot of freedom, I will say that”, stated Program Administrator, Elizabeth Borders. “You can cater to your child’s learning style. So, if they are having some difficulties somewhere, you can work on that and focus on that. Or they can be super-advanced, and you can move their pace”
The program starts at a K-3 level and teaches up to a 10th-grade high school level. By the time a student reaches high school, they have earned enough credits to go on to a dual-enrollment program in college.
“Right now, our 7th graders are working out of a 9th-grade curriculum for language arts. So even though they are in 7th grade; they are earning a high school credit as we speak in language arts and that can be used as a credit for English in their high school years”, stated Elizabeth.

With the children being at home most of the time, the concern for the spread of COVID is not as heightened, but the program still takes precautions by only having ten children in a classroom at a time.
“You’re going to know if your child is struggling in a public sector or a private sector. It’s really about the needs of your child. One thing is not better than the other. Other than what your child needs.”
