On Tuesday, Rod Hickman and Dr. Minh Duong became the two remaining candidates in the special election for district 32 state senate seat. Now, with only two weeks until the runoff election, both candidates are sharpening the focus of their campaigns.

Dr. Duong is emphasizing his experience as an optometrist:

“I hope that people realize that having 25 employees, having the experience of managing a big business, having the experience of life being a PAC chair, having the experience of having a core nucleus family with Christian values “stated Dr. Duong “These are all things I hope people see as a positive, so I can gain their trust and do better things here for District 32”

Rod Hickman is highlighting his experience as an attorney:

“I’ve always had a team of people behind me, because the people that know me, know that I am passionate and that I will do what’s necessary for Mississippi”, said Hickman. “People have voiced their opinion on what they need to see done. I’ll continue to be a listening ear; I’ll continue to advocate for the needs of the people in District 32”

Neither candidate received a majority vote in the special election held on Tuesday, causing the run-off. Low voter turnout is an issue both candidates are trying to fight.

“We’re going to be doing everything we can to not only get the people out that voted but also people who didn’t get out to vote”, explained Hickman.

“Now we know who voted and who didn’t. Now we can target specific types of people and try to get my message out in a more targeted manner”, stated Dr. Minh Duong

And both candidates say their message to the voters is clear:

“My platform is always going to be healthcare because I am a doctor”, stated Dr. Duong. “Preventive healthcare is what I want to focus on, as opposed to after the fact when something happens. We’ve always wanted to have better paying jobs, better businesses coming in and that’s a part of my platform.”

“Healthcare, our education system, infrastructure and just making sure that we can put critical resources into the district. The one thing I will add is criminal justice reform. That is major on my list as a prosecutor. Those things are the top of list because those are important to District 32” said Rod Hickman

The runoff election in the state Senate District 32 is set for Tuesday, November 23rd.
